Remember I told you about the dress kit I found in my box of auction buys? I took it out to have a go at putting it together but before I started sewing I thought I’d pin the pieces together to see the overall effect first. Well, it’s a good job I did. It’s flippin’ ginormous!!
Duchess is in there somewhere, you’ll have to take my word for it because she’s hardly visible. I really have no experience of vintage patterns or their sizing but by today’s measurements I’m about a size 14/40 and in RTW I buy a UK 10 or 12. The dress kit is Bust 40 and it’s a really basic design so perhaps has masses of ease. Anyway, considering I had doubts over the style and whether I would wear it anyway, I’ve decided to pack it away in the envelope and save it for someone who will appreciate it more than me.
I would quite like to try some of the patterns that came in the auction boxes but most of them are Bust 32 or 34. I have no idea if 34 really means 34 or if it would come up bigger. Anyone know any good resources to help a newbie with sizing old patterns?




If they are American patterns, then the 34 will mean a bust of 34 inches, for sure. Post pictures if you can. Also the kit dress is probably made for a 40 inch bust.
